[Following is a volunteer review of "Play Golf Better Faster: The Little Golf Bag Book" by Kalliope Barlis.]
My most significant relationship with golf until recently was my older brother's first job at a golf equipment store. Whether due to my lack of natural talent or just plain not having an interest, I had always thought of golf as a pretty boring sport. That changed when I encountered Kalliope Barlis and her books. Through her writing, I have now come to appreciate not only the intricacies of the sport but also the dedication that it takes to become even a mediocre golfer. Play Golf Better Faster: The Little Golf Bag Book is chock-full of insights and advice about how to improve. These are ideas that you can apply on the course, at home, or even while just thinking about your golf game.
I have enjoyed every one of the three books I have read by this author. I appreciate her clear, concise writing style, which underscores her desire to share with her audience the life lessons she has learned. This particular book focuses on the sport of golf, and I think she does a fantastic job of using her considerable experience in the sport to enlighten and benefit those who are reading her.
Barlis's aims for her players are simple yet effective. Anyone who struggles with the basic mechanics of the swing, particularly the way the hands and arms move, will benefit from this book. Barlis accomplishes her stated purpose with a clear, step-by-step approach that is easy to understand and follow. Golf as a sport is not easily mastered, and even this work does not offer the "quick fix" that some golfers might hope for. Still, with its focus on the proper way to grip the club and move the arms and hands, Barlis's book helps those who would like to attain a basic level of proficiency with the swing.
As I read this book and wrote my review, nothing negative came to mind to say about it. The book's content proceeded in a logical manner and had a clear structure. Chapters were of a suitable length to make them easily digestible, and one was never left wondering what any part of the book was doing there. It was well-edited with no typos; I am quite confident that what I read was what the author intended to convey. So, yes, I am giving this textbook a rating of 5 out of 5 stars.
This book comes highly recommended, both for those who would like to understand the sport better and for seasoned golfers who want to elevate their performance to the next level. It is appropriate for all ages, containing only a single mild profanity and no overt themes.
