[Following is a volunteer review of "We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz.]
5 out of 5 stars.
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies tells the story of Galen Bray as he flees from a war-torn country to settle in the enigmatic and lively Voulhire kingdom. Inheriting his great-uncle’s property in Magnum Caelum, Galen finds himself in a world full of magic, political plots, and hidden truths. Along the way, he meets terrifying characters such as Meldorath, the mage feared by all, Lord Eldus Alderman, who leads nobles with an iron fist, or Riva Rohavi warriors – a faction known for its ruthlessness. Desiring nothing more than starting afresh somewhere else, Galen gets caught up in the struggle for power within this new land, thus beginning an adventure that will shake kingdoms.
I gave We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies five stars because it was terrific at world-building, had interesting characters, and had a great plot. Matthew Tysz does an excellent job of introducing Voulhire, a complex place where magic meets politics meets mystery, and all these elements work together seamlessly. The main character, Galen Bray, is relatable and inspiring, making the book very engaging. There is so much going on with them, too: from Meldorath, the enigmatic mage, to Lord Eldus Alderman, who can’t be trusted because he’s too noble. This novel has action scenes and explores deep thoughts around intricate subjects while keeping readers entertained through every page turn. The author has set things up well here for what promises to be a fantastic series – any fantasy lover should read this first book.
While it is a fantastic read, I think a few things could be improved about “We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies.” For one, the large cast of characters and elaborate world-building may initially overwhelm some readers. Therefore, extra attention is required to keep track of different plotlines and relationships. Another thing is that some of the plot elements could have been explored more deeply, such as the Riva Rohavi warriors’ history. However, this book has minor issues that do not take away from its overall quality. The strengths of this book far outweigh any minor drawbacks like those listed above, which is why it deserves all five stars.
The book was edited so well and smartly that I couldn’t find any mistakes throughout the entire thing.
The book has excellent world-building, complex characters, and exciting plotlines. Matthew Tysz does a tremendous job mixing magic, politics, and mystery, making it engaging as all three are equally important for this genre. Any fan of fantasy should read this book because it is truly one of a kind.
