This is truly a little gem of a book for professional golfers if you ask me. I am not a pro-golf player, but I have used strategies and followed the exercises from Kalliope Barlis’s previous guide, “Play Golf Better Faster - The Classic Guide to Optimizing Your Performance.” Initially, the exercises seemed easy, but trust me, they are not. Consistency and focus are essential. Visualizing yourself from a bird’s eye view is no small feat. Finding the sweet center spot of the ball and the club is a challenge. These exercises are made with professional golfing in mind. With that being said, let’s get the little book out of the bag.

“Play Golf Better Faster - The Golf Bag Book” by Kalliope Barlis is yet another beautiful rendition of its predecessor. It is short and sweet. The author provides a clear and precise understanding of what needs to be done while practicing, before and after the game. Although it includes many of the exercises from the previous book, it stands out with its reduced use of golf slang and increased focus on NLP-based training, concentrating on essentials with some added treats.

Kalliope Barlis starts by discussing how to set your mind before the game, transitioning to focus and learning mode during the game, and lastly, maintaining your mindset after the game. Her methods are deeply rooted in the chemistry between the mind and the brain. The non-physical mind significantly influences the physical brain, which is central to her strategies. The author skillfully maneuvers between milestones like positive mindset, memorizing, stronger intention, focus, etc., creating neural pathways, just to accentuate the fact that your mind is entirely under your control. As proof, she provides strategies that show your intention does more than half the job in achieving a great shot.

The reason why I am excited about this book is because of the newly added techniques and strategies. Techniques to maintain the distance between you and the ball are plain common sense but brilliant when you are explained the outcomes for different distances. The book also offers various patterns to enhance your experience. The author lays down strategies related to the type of field, wind, angle, slope, and finally, green speed. These are just a few highlights; there are more in the book that will be an eye-opener or maybe a refresher. Regardless, you must read this book regularly and practice with honesty for a high yield, as Kalliope Barlis emphasizes.

The author wastes no time and dives straight into action from the start. She covers all corners of the game along with the personal well-being of the player. Illustrations for techniques add to a better visual experience. There were hardly any typographical errors, and the use of simple English makes it easy to understand. As I said, this is a true handbook to refer to at the need of the hour, with chapters dedicated specifically to different aspects of the game. I loved this book. The author shows dedication and passion which will surely help you gain confidence and perform at your best. I was particularly struck by her words as she quotes: “It was all in how my client thought about life that changed his perspective so that he could lead a happier life. All it took for him to change was the amount of time it took for you to read that sentence.” I believe her. I give this book a solid 5 out of 5.
