[Following is a volunteer review of "We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz.]
Matthew Tysz’s We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies is the first entry in his series. This book has a plot about the kingdom of Voulhire, which seems to be perfect, but underneath it hides various vile activities. Young Galen Bray flees from Princes’ Land to take over his departed uncle's forge in Magnum Caelum, a city of the Voulhire realm. Under Rowan, his uncle’s executor, Galen adapts to his new life and embarks on an adventure full of discovery in an unfamiliar country.
The book also explores different political and magical aspects of Voulhire. The novel excels at developing characters and engaging them in plots such as the humorous and free-spirited Rowan who stands out from others due to their kindness. Galen could have simply dealt with matters relating to his late uncle’s estate, but rather, Rowan became a venerated friend and tutor and demonstrated himself worthy of commendation.
Although at times the complex storytelling slows down some parts, thereby making it difficult to pick some storyline connections, this is reasonable since it’s just the first book in a series that lays the groundwork for revelations about Voulhire, her neighboring realms, and Caromentis—the magical world.
The settings are cast well by the author with the help of a map and glossary, which creates a unique environment. In addition, this story raises puzzling questions like: What really stands between good and bad? Thus, it goes beyond mere entertainment.
In general, I found nothing to hate about this book, and therefore, I would rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. For one thing, it is remarkably edited, devoid of any grammatical mistakes. It is best suited for adults as well as mature teenagers who are into fantasy or mystery genres characterized by suspense, especially those who enjoy reading stories with rich backdrops and intricate narratives.
