[Following is a volunteer review of "First Survivor" by Mark Unger.]
In First Survivor, Mark Unger tells the deeply moving and inspiring story of his son Louis’ battle with neuroblastoma. This journey is filled with relentless treatments, heartbreaking setbacks, and, ultimately, a glimmer of hope. As Louis’ parents, Mark and Mary Ellen, embarked on their tireless mission to save their son, they became unwavering champions, pushing the limits of conventional medicine and exploring uncharted territories. Their story, beautifully captured in this book, highlights the unwavering dedication of parents who will face any challenge to save their child’s life.
Mark Unger shares his family's agonizing experience after his son Louis's neuroblastoma diagnosis. The journey started with subtle behavioral changes, misdiagnosed as Legg-Perthes disease, but worsened into fatigue, irritability, and daytime naps. The Ungers navigated multiple medical visits, ending in a chaotic emergency room, facing uncertainty and the terrifying possibility of leukemia.
What I truly loved about this book was Louis’ unwavering dedication to his treatment and his unshakeable optimism, even in the face of adversity. His infectious positivity won over the medical team, who became deeply invested in his recovery. Meanwhile, his parents, Mark and Mary Ellen, showed incredible unity and devotion. They made sure Louis received the best care possible, all while tenderly balancing their attention and affection with his younger brother, Harry, who was just five years old.
This book is truly a masterpiece, with flawless editing and no shortcomings at all. The author addresses childhood cancer with raw honesty, diving deep into the details of Louis’ treatment, including the specific drugs and medical procedures. I give it a wholehearted 5 out of 5 stars. It’s a must-read for anyone touched by cancer, offering a beacon of hope and resilience. Additionally, it provides a unique insight into the complex world of childhood cancer research and treatment, making it an invaluable resource for those facing similar challenges.
