Review of Wise Winston's Walk
Wise Winston's Walk by Jim Trebbien is about a dog teaching kids life lessons. In the book, Winston the dog gives gifts to 11 children, including his 2 owners. However, those gifts are not childhood favourites, like toy cars, candy, or tablets. Instead, Winston listens to the children's worries, answers their questions, and guides them through the emotional hurdles they face.
Winston is the figure every parent, teacher, and guardian aspires to be. He is gentle, empathetic, and non-judgmental. He is the role model children desperately need in their lives to grow up as healthy individuals. Winston does not need to threaten or yell at children to make them do the right thing. Whenever he comes across a child with a burden, he offers a safe space for the child to express their doubts, desires, and innermost feelings, then steers them to the virtuous path. As a result, children adore him, trust him, and thank him.
I love the part where Winston convinces Jon to eat his vegetables by saying the vegetables give him strength to play. Most people in real life tell their kids to eat their vegetables because they are nutritious, but kids have no idea what that means. On the other hand, Winston takes a different approach. He taps into Jon's desire for play. He knows that play is a powerful motivator, so he explains that the vegetables are not harmful. In fact, they help Jon unlock the strength he needs to play. In other words, he cannot play if he only eats junk food and does not eat nutritious food. It is no wonder Jon heeds the talking dog's advice.
To sum up, Wise Winston's Walk is one of the best books for children to answer life's questions. Parents, teachers, and guardians can also use this book as a means of learning how to communicate and actively listen to kids. I do not have anything negative to say about this book. The kids' questions are relatable, and Winston is a lovable character. Therefore, I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.

That's right! This book does a great job of explaining nutrition without being naggy.Jeff Kanda wrote: ↑20 Apr 2025, 13:50 The dog seems to be a wise character. Such books that have lessons for children are so great. I believe that children learning important things such as nutrition goes a long way. Thanks for the review!

I'm sure your grandkids would like talking dogs like Winston!Gerry Steen wrote: ↑16 Apr 2025, 08:22 Active listening is an important element of teaching that is often forgotten. Children learn a lot because of their curiosity. Good explanations are also important. It looks like this dog, Winston, has this down pat! i am adding this book to my bookshelves for my grandkids.
