[Following is a volunteer review of "In the Heart of the Linden Wood" by Ekta R. Garg.]
In the Heart of the Linden Wood, written by Ekta R Garg, is a beautifully written story that weaves a little bit of magic into a traditional medieval setting. The story is about a king, Christopher, who is dealing with the grief of losing his wife and unborn child, while still needing to handle the responsibilities of a kingdom. As well, he must work together with a poor healer and her son on a quest to save the kingdom from the loss of magic they are dependent on. The healer, Geraldine, is a more sympathetic character than the king and it is nice to see her perspective and how she cares for her son and her village.
The characters were well developed and you grow to care for them. I wanted to finish the book to learn about their future. As well, the way the book explored the connections between them was engaging and thoughtful. This book has no adult themes, other than grief, and would be a good pick for teenage readers, as well as adults. There is no profanity contained within it either. The author did a great job of writing a book which can appeal to a wide audience.
Their journey takes them through the kingdom and to several different villages along the way. It would be nice to have a map included at the beginning so that you can better visualize their travels and understand the distances. However, even without a map, you can form a general idea of the locations based on the descriptive writing.
The book was edited very well and it shows a large amount of effort and care given. I enjoyed how earlier details tied into the ending and it gave a smooth progression throughout the story.
Based on all of these reasons, I’m rating this book a 5 out of 5. I enjoyed reading it and would recommend it to anyone who likes stories involving fantasy.
