Poppy Mortimer's 28 Disastrous Dates: A (Mostly True) Humorous Memoir is full of embarrassing stories and clever points and is an absolute necessity on the bookshelf of any nervously sweating first-date goer. They include chapters such as: Each chapter explores a cringe-worthy anecdote, right from the cocky and arrogant ones to the strangest of the lot. It is meant to be lighthearted, telling the reader about the author's numerous uncomfortable situations stemming from her poor choices with men.

While the author is the main protagonist, the book presents several possible love interests, all of which have their own unique oddities and faults. The funny males range from self-possessed to the completely absurd; the humor serves to lighten the mood of these stories and provide a look into the author's vision of relationships. The memoir is a good reminder to everyone who has ever tried to date. The author shares enthralling and funny anecdotes about her dates and her desire to find a partner and be in love. My only complaint is that the author is far too humble for her own good and can make any situation extremely funny.

The humorous content of the book is well-welcomed by readers, but some may consider the display of dates gone wrong as repetitive or superficial. Further, the book has the problem of setting the spotlight on such negative experiences, which may not be preferred by readers in search of an inspirational book. The author may think about providing more information about why her dating experiences were falling short again and again, providing more about her personal development., which might bring more positive experiences or a positive point of view on the opportunities learned from these experiences. The editing of the book seems to be good; there are not many grammatical and stylistic mistakes that could be identified.

I would give 28 Disastrous Dates: A (Mostly True) Humorous Memoir a 5 out of 5-star rating since the author did an excellent job of conveying her experiences with dating disasters. Although it is not a book for all, those who are looking for a funny and realistic story of life may get lots of joy reading this light but wonderfully-written narrative.
