Review of The Hermit Gryphon
“The Hermit Gryphon” by Paula Grover is a science fiction and fantasy story that follows Talona on her journey of redemption for being a terrible queen and for doing atrocities to her community of Gryphonia, which now hates her and makes her unwelcome everywhere she goes.
The story is told from the point of view of Talona, the wicked queen, now defeated and confined to her home cave with her mother by order of Sunsky, the Oracle Queen. She is determined to make people understand that her actions are not of her own making but of her terrible inner phantom, Deathgrip, which is an extremely difficult task since no one trusts her anymore.
Her true journey begins when her healer sends her to Forest Lake, a community far away from the mountain, to a soul healer, Snow Wing. There she will find unexpected friends, an emotional healing process, and a new terrible enemy that will put in danger not only her life, the community of Forest Lake, where she will begin her new life experience, but also her home. You must read this book to find out how Tal will react. Will she save only herself, or will she undergo an inner change and help those who hate her as well?
Although this is the second book in the series, it can be read as a standalone, and the events of the first book will be perfectly understood by the reader in order to enjoy this one.
This book's emphasis on the “villain’s” point of view was undoubtedly one of my favorite features. It was touching to get inside the wicked queen and understand her actions and the difficult past that led her to the bad leader she was. Her healing process was intense and very relatable for such a damaged being.
The book, which I believe has the potential to greatly influence young readers, contains an incredible lesson from the author about forgiveness, the value of having an open mind and faith in the healing process of others, and the importance of always being there for our loved ones because you never know when someone might surprise you with a positive change in their life. She also discusses how difficult it can be to find redemption once we have lost the trust and care of our community.
My rating for this book is 5 out of 5 because the author creates a great story with amazing environments and a complex character that made the reader connect with her in every emotional aspect of her journey. The simple writing style makes it suitable and engaging for young readers. There is nothing I dislike about the book, and it was also professionally edited, as I could not find any mistakes in it.
I recommend this book to teenagers and adults who are fans of fantasy stories and mythological creatures. As for the age rating, it doesn't contain a sexual content that would prevent young readers from enjoying it.
