Have you ever been in a gruelling situation where you have to make tough decisions, especially as a young person? Well, it is very common as the world is rapidly changing and we must adapt to the changes or face displacement. In Search of Achilles, authored by Marco van den Berg Scholten, is a wonderfully written novel that delves into themes of identity, human growth, and the search for purpose in a world turning quickly. Set in post-Communist Europe, it is an emotionally gripping and thought-provoking work. Johan, the main character, is a young student studying literature who leaves his village and returns years later. The protagonist's life is in jeopardy because he has the freedom to follow his own desires and pursue his writing career, or to be influenced by his family at any time.

Johan struggles through nonage, navigating his connections with friends and family as well as trying to find his place in a world that's rapidly changing. Johan joins a group of musketeers and is exposed to a world of partying, drinking, and defiance. The leader of the group, Achilles, is a personality of the reckless abandon and disillusionment of their time. Johan develops an admiration for Achilles since he views him as a representation of defiance and liberty. Johan starts to realise the bleakness of their actuality and the brutal reality of their deeds as his relationship with the group grows. He starts to question his own values and sense of identity. Johan's journey takes a turning point as he faces a series of challenges and setbacks. He starts to reform his life, building new connections and discovering a sense of purpose. Throughout the novel, Johan battles with questions about identity, a sense of belonging, and how to better his life.

There's absolutely nothing I disliked about this book. The author carefully examines the lifestyle and struggles of a typical youth. The plot of the novel deeply resonates with what is evident in society. Grab a copy of this book to find out how Johan navigates through the challenges. What role did his family play? What moral lessons could be learnt from this book?

I rate this book, In Search of Achilles, five out of five stars for its depiction of reality, writing quality, and pacing. I found no errors in this book, indicating that it was exceptionally well edited. I recommend this book to young people who are in a state of dilemma and lovers of good stories.
