We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is the first book in a series of fantasy introducing the readers to the huge and complex world of Voulhire. The tale narrates the journey of Galen Bray, a young man who is trying to run away from land torn by war, called The Land of the Princeso, in search of a new life in the prosperous kingdom of Voulhire. Upon his arrival in Voulhire, Galen soon finds out that beneath its outer skin, the place of peace and prosperity is full of political intrigue, dark magic, and hidden dangers.
Galen's arrival heralds a journey of transformation as he inherits a forge from an uncle he had never known, thereby getting entangled in the mysterious and turbulent affairs of Voulhire. En route, he encounters a motley array of characters, each with their own agendas, and begins to uncover deep-seated tensions between the rulers of the kingdom, the church, and powerful sorcerers.
Throughout the book are discussions of power, morality, and a clashing of technological ideas with that of sorcery. Voulhire is a land of contrasts—from science and sorcery all the way to a balance of its kingdom, which is threatened inside and outside of its force. As Galen tries to find his place within this new world, he finds himself stuck in events that might shape the future of Voulhire.
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies is an interesting blend of serious worldbuilding and seriously philosophical questions regarding governance, authority, and the use thereof. Matthew Tysz creates a story that sets up an epic fantasy full of mystery and adventure amongst complex political dynamics. I found no errors in the book. It was well-edited. I rate this book five out of five stars. I found nothing to dislike about the book, and that's why it has a perfect rating. I recommend this book to lovers of fantasy and action.
