Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies

[Following is a volunteer review of "We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz.]
In "We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz the protagonist, Galen Bray, a refugee from the war devastated "Lands of the Princes", finds himself in the mysterious kingdom of Voulhire. After inheriting the forge from his great uncle in the quiet town of Magnum Caelum, Galen looks forward to a life of no excitement. However, he gets involved in a peculiar and sinister conspiracy after uncovering his mysterious links to the kingdom's political and magical landscape. As the story progresses, Galen starts adapting to his new reality to some degree, although tension in Voulhire has been simmering for quite a while now.
Parallel to the storyline is King Wilhelm, the ruler of the land, and Midius Maido, a cruel, ambitious High Chancellor who aspires to seize power. Furthermore, amidst the political unrest, the looming figure of the enigmatic "Lord Meldorath" can not be ignored. Meldorath, the great sorcerer, exiled for many years now, is still remembered, and his return is feared all across the kingdom.
Exploring Magnum Caelum, Galen discovers that his great uncle's heritage connects him to the even bigger unknowns of Voulhire. Other eerie happenings in Magnum Caelum prove that even the calm town is not safe from the troubles haunting the kingdom. Moreover, there is a looming air of conspiracy due to the secret letters, politics, and the war that happened not long ago. As Galen learns more about his uncle’s secrets and the conflict in Voulhire in general, the story poses the question of where Galen fits in all the conspiracies.
Throughout the book, the character and plot are consistently developed. While the beginning chapters might be slower as the author builds up the storyline, the novel later maintains a good reading pace. Moreover, Lord Meldorath's enigmatic character and the growing political tension further increase the tension.
From the very elaborate world and complex characters to the vibrant settings, I would say everything about this novel met and exceeded my expectations. I also noticed minimal errors, which implies good editing. In all, I am rating this book a perfect 5 out of 5 stars. I recommend it to anyone looking for an immersive read, a multilayered plot, and complex characters.
