Review of The Buchanan Bastard

[Following is a volunteer review of "The Buchanan Bastard" by Dedra L. Stevenson.]
In "The Buchanan Bastard," authored by Dedra L. Stevenson, Brian Buchanan assumes ownership of Buchanan Oil after Jack’s demise. He gets married to Laura, and they’re joyfully expecting a baby. Laura’s life seems perfect until she comes back from a charity function dinner to find the naked, dead bodies of Brian and a strange woman, both with bullet holes. She gets arrested for murder and is sent to jail. Greatly in need of help, Laura contacts Larry, her father, who is a criminal lawyer and mayor. They work hand in hand to uncover the mystery behind these deaths.
This book is a crime story set in New Orleans during the period of 1970. It is an intriguing blend of murder, intense family drama, and a revelation of family secrets. I love how, instead of chapters, the book is divided into narratives from different characters such as Laura, Larry, Jim, Brian, Coral, and so on.
From the author’s meticulous choice of words, readers easily feel the range of emotions running through Laura’s mind, as they’re amazed by her resourcefulness, resilient spirit, and strong will. I love how the author depicts scenes in New Orleans, and I applaud his creativity to create a mental imagery of its surroundings: from the atmospheric condition to the putrid smell of some areas to the music played in the streets.
I don’t find any flaws in the book, and I love how the author puts some details about some of these characters. Although it contains a few errors, it didn’t hinder me from comprehending the storyline. I totally give this book 5 out of 5 stars for these mentioned reasons. I highly recommend this to readers who love crime thrillers, mysteries, and family dramas with a touch of romance. It is equally most suited for a mature audience, as the profanities involved aren’t appropriate for the younger ages.
