[Following is a volunteer review of "Winning at Leading Women In Leadership" by Ronica Watkins, PhD.]
"Winning at Leading: Women in Leadership" is a motivational book authored by Dr. Ronica Watkins that targets women seeking leadership roles or positions. It highlights the barriers and obstacles women face while navigating work life and also offers solutions to these issues. There are important tips readers should put in place in order to get started as leaders, such as networking, engaging in a community, being part of local organizations, and so on.
This book goes further to highlight the qualities of a good leader, which include possessing soft skills such as good listening, empathy, problem solving, proactiveness, and effective communication, among others. Here, the author educates readers that one can practice becoming a leader without waiting to be given a leadership role. In other words, a great leader is one who, even without a title, makes an impact at every level. The author equally discusses the barriers and challenges women face while pursuing their careers, including building strategies to break free from them. There are also tips on strategies women can adopt in order to find their voice in a male-dominated leadership workforce.
I like how the author includes the concept of mentorship and having a voice; a good mentor is one who gives proper guidance and helps you avoid some mistakes in life. Readers should endeavour to adopt more skills, such as emotional intelligence and networking. I also like how Watkins highlighted the importance of having a strong support network as a woman. It also teaches women to build resilience, create a work-life balance, and properly invest in self-care. Again, women get to learn the art of saying no and redefine compromise in leadership.
I have no negatives to discuss in this book. It is well written, and the author has made it a point of duty to highlight and elaborate on the most salient points. For these solid reasons, I’m obliged to award it a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. There are no errors found, and it is recommended to women in general who seem to have lost their bearing in life, as it will help them stay back on track. Again, it is a self-esteem booster, as it will also help them bravely navigate tough times in life.
