[Following is a volunteer review of "First Survivor" by Mark Unger.]
First Survivor[i/]
Mark Unger
This is the true story of the Unger family, Mark, Mary Ellen, Harry and Louis. On Thanksgiving Day in 2001, little 3 year old Louis was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma, a rare pediatric cancer. And it was in stage 4. Chances of survival were not good.
They had been running test on Louis for about 3 days and 3 nights, and haven't come up with any diagnosis, or they weren't sharing it with Mark and Mary Ellen.
Mark decided they would not just accept that Louis would die. They took matters into their own hands. They started contacting all the doctors and hospitals that worked with Neuroblastoma cancer patients, to find the best one they could to help their son. They chose the most aggressive treatments that were available. After years of procedures, they were finally successful. Louis was the First Survivor of Neuroblastoma! He was cancer free!
This is a great story of courage, dedication, determination and strength. What this family went through has given hope to so many people who might be going through the same situation. Mark learned to be an advocate for his son, and left instructions for other parents of sick children to do the same. He and Mary Ellen have been an inspiration for thousands of parents, children and doctors all over the world.
All proceeds from this book will go to the Carrot Seed Foundation, founded by Mark and Mary Ellen Unger, where they will be used to fund neuroblastoma clinical trials and support the children and families who are stricken by this disease.
Mark Unger is the author of this book, and also the father of Louis. He has done a wonderful job of telling their story, keeping records and educating so many on this terrible disease.
I love this book. I believe you will love it also. It seemed to be professionally edited.
I gave it a 5 out of 5 stars[b/].
I gave it a 4 out of 4 stars [b/].
