[Following is a volunteer review of "We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz.]
Wow is the first thought that comes to mind after reading “We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies” by Matthew Tysz. I was immediately drawn to this book by its genre, which just so happens to be my favorite genre, Sci-Fi/Fantasy. The prologue immediately pulls you in with the guards trying to ward off an intruder. As the story goes on you meet many different characters, which can sometimes be confusing but I found it easy to follow. The chapter headings explain kind of what you will be reading in that chapter. Whether it takes you to a place or whether that chapter is in one of the characters' points of view. This book is the first of many in the “We are Voulhire” series so it is a lot of world-building, getting to know the characters and setting up the story. If you are someone who doesn’t enjoy slower pacing or world-building, I highly recommend at least giving it a try. The author has done a superb job of making it a fascinating read with humor and a lot of action along the way.
The start of the book introduces a character named Galen who is traveling to a new place. I loved following his story the most because he reminded me of my absolute favorite book "The Alchemist." His outlook on life and the hope and awe he has. I also really enjoyed reading about Lord Eldus and his family. Starting over in a brand new place with all of their own challenges. I know fantasy usually has components of magic but this novel introduced it in such a crazy way that I haven’t seen before.
I am rating this book a 5 out of 5. The writing was super easy to read with hardly any proofreading errors. It kept me engaged the entire time. I didn’t find any parts of it necessarily slow or boring, which says something to me, especially with world-building. I cannot wait to continue with the series!
