We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is a science fiction and fantasy book. A corrupt knight, relentless pack of rebels and “perhaps the most powerful wizard in human history” gives way to this captivating story that far exceeded my expectations.

I loved the twists and turns, for not everything is as it seems in the country of Voulhire. It is filled with adventure and action. Tysz’s storytelling abilities make this a very gripping read, so much so, that I struggled to put it down. Each chapter is a separate narrative which adds to the author being able to delve into such great depth with the characters. Despite each chapter focusing on a different character I found that the story still flowed smoothly. Matthew Tysz did a brilliant job with the creation of the world. I loved the world-building and having a map of the land included with the book was a great addition that I love to use to understand the travels and adventures of the characters. I especially loved the uniqueness of each character and the vivid descriptions of the cities. I found the book was overall quite immersive which no doubt was what helped to hold my attention.

The story is a little complex in certain places but has no spelling or grammatical errors that I noticed. I appreciated that it was so well written and edited. I found it suspenseful and startlingly exciting in parts, especially where scenes get violent and graphic. Adult themes run throughout the book and it does contain sexual content.

My only, very slight, criticism would be that I found the book to end quite abruptly but I can see how this might be intentional. As this is only a very tiny negative, I am happy to rate We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz a 5 out of 5. Both fantasy fans and sci fi fans will equally love it and I will be reading ahead. I can’t wait to see how Tysz expands on the characters and multiverse we were introduced to, in book two.
