[Following is a volunteer review of "Apollo's Raven" by Linnea Tanner.]
The story “Apollo’s Raven: Curse of the Clansmen and Kings” is a story that entails a riveting blend of historical fantasy, mythology, and romance set in 24 AD on what could be seen as the southeast coast of Britannia. The author Lienna Tanners’s debut novel introduces readers to different enticing feelings such as romance, magic, and political intrigue, all focusing on the life of a fierce, independent Celtic warrior princess that goes by the name Catrin.
The story sheds more light on Catrin, the youngest daughter of the king and queen Rhiannon. She already possesses the powers of a Druidess, not to mention the psychic connection she has to a raven that allows her to see in both the past and the future. What's seen as a mystic ability comes along with a curse tied on her family by a formal queen, which marks her as a potential downfall to her father's kingdom. There was already tension between the Celtic tribes and the Roman Empire, and the life of Catrin became more entangled with that of Marcellus, a Roman hostage and the great grandson of Mark Anthony.
Lienna Tanner skillfully draws out the themes of forbidden love, loyalty, and duty as Catrin is tasked with extracting secrets from Marcellus while struggling with feelings that grow for him daily. The romance between Catrin and Marcellus is kept with a serious amount of tension, as their relationship is not only forbidden but also complicated by political machinations on both sides.
“Apollo’s Raven” is an engaging and well-written start to a promising series. Readers that enjoy historical fantasy and romance as well would find much joy in this book because it's really an intricate tale of love, magic, and struggle as well.
Reading this book was more than a fun exercise; it inspired me to reflect on my own path and live a more fulfilling life. There was absolutely nothing to dislike about this book; the author really took time into writing the book. Overall, this book was an excellent read.
I’d rate this book five out of five stars. I didn't find any grammatical errors as well while reading it.
