Review of Righteous Gathering

[Following is a volunteer review of "Righteous Gathering" by Book 1 of the Righteous Survival EMP Saga.]
It was a peaceful September day on Mark Mays’ farmstead. He is watching the contrails of three jets cross the blue sky. Suddenly, the jets fall to Earth. Shocked, he prays to God, hoping he will ascend to heaven because he feels the Rapture has arrived. When nothing happens, he notices everything requiring electricity has stopped working. Instead of a rapture, an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) has taken down the power grid. Mark knows his self-sustaining farmstead will keep his family members safe. Eight hours later, most of the family is safe, but Mark still has to get his daughter Britt and her family from their homes.
The second day, Mark, Kenny, Britt, two grandsons, and a stranded couple encounter the Wagerly gang. When the Wagerly gang blocks a bridge, Kenny shoots five of the men. At the next roadblock, the guards tell the group the Wagerly brothers killed eight people and robbed local businesses. Back on the farmstead, everyone is divided into shifts to guard their haven. Meanwhile, one of Mark's employees, Herc, has been forced to leave his home and faces danger to find his way to his boss' farmstead.
Timothy A. Van Sickel’s Righteous Gathering: Book One of the Righteous Survival EMP Saga is a Christian story featuring the Mays family. Using flashbacks to show how Mark has prepared his farmstead to survive off-grid, the story sets the scene for the chaos that will follow an attack on America’s power grid. Death becomes a reality as the family travels to their rural Pennsylvania home. The faith the Mays family display was is strong, and several prayers were said, believing God will keep them safe. A premonition Mark’s mother told him several years ago seemed to have come true. She said, “God has a plan for you, Mark. Follow his plan.”
I was drawn into the narrative, and I could easily visualize the destruction an electromagnetic pulse would bring about. Today, so many people rely on the convenience of cell phones, automated machinery, and electricity. The amazing character development exceeded my expectations. The unpredictable plot was captivating with realistic events. There isn’t anything I disliked about this dystopian story. Therefore, I am rating this book five out of five stars.
Righteous Gathering: Book One of the Righteous Survival EMP Saga is best suited for Christian readers who enjoy dystopian stories with God’s blessing for his followers. There is some mild profanity, and the graphic violence may overwhelm younger people. I am eager to read the rest of the series, as the suspenseful ending promises to continue this epic saga.
