[Following is a volunteer review of "Eggstravagant Easter Eggs" by Maya Elston.]
Eggstravagant Easter Eggs is a non-fiction book on decorating Easter eggs by famous artist and art conservator Maya Elston. Though unaware of Easter and other Christian customs, I chose this book to gain new ideas for doing artwork with eggs.
According to the author, the Slavic people in European countries place special importance on decorating Easter eggs with unique styles. So, she mentions various unparalleled designs for ornate eggs. Not only designs, but she also talks about the associated tools and other necessary items. She gives detailed information on different types of eggs and how to handle them during beautification.
Her readers will get a crystal-clear idea of candy-style eggs, polka dot eggs, decoupage, and lace-decorated eggs. She also speaks about Italian, Spanish, Greek, and ethnic embroidery patterns for egg decoration. She is minute and expresses every detail to make her readers comprehend the process easily. Her approach is to make them capable of ornating their eggs beautifully.
She mentions various websites and online and offline sources to buy materials. She tries hard to make the process inexpensive yet fulfilling to the heart. She uses numerous photos of her creation and also shows detailed processes through photos to make the extensive process easy to understand.
I was greatly attracted by the author's use of multiple photos which added authenticity and visualization and made her book more appealing. Her intense knowledge and detailed description made me enthusiastic to try this as an artistic endeavour. Though I found this book to be more suitable for the Christian community, even the art lover would be tempted to try to decorate the eggs.
The only thing I disliked was that the author propagated the methods of egg decoration as easy and simple. The author has intense knowledge and training on art but it could not be achieved by a naive enthusiast. Ancient Greek style, Italian and Spanish style, imperial eggs and black and white egg decoration seemed unattainable for a beginner. But the author seemed indifferent to this fact.
However, the book is praiseworthy because of its professional editing which is without any typos. Despite some complexities, this book deserves a rating of 5 out of 5 stars because of its vivid artistic descriptions. I would love to recommend this book to those who are keen on Easter egg decoration and those who want to learn a new form of art.
