[Following is a volunteer review of "What did you do at school today?" by C.C. Lacavera.]
What Did You Do At School Today? by C. C. Lacavera is a charming children's book that asks a series of questions about the child's day at school. It starts with basic questions such as what did you see? Did you draw anything? Then, the questions slowly build to more extravagant ideas, such as meeting pirates or climbing a rainbow. It frames school as a magical adventure and motivates children to discuss their day.
Each page of the book showcased vibrant illustrations that went along with the text. I thought the bright colors were eye-catching. I particularly enjoyed the artwork of the creature with the googly eyes that accompanied the pages about making artwork. They will help children visualize the possibilities for their day at school. For children who are apprehensive about going to school, it could be helpful to give them an idea of what it could be like.
The questions are written in rhyming pairs. This is always appreciated for children's books as it is catchy and can help those who are learning to read. The language used is simple and easy for kids to understand. The questions are also quite open-ended, which gives kids the opportunity to embellish and expand on what happened during their day. The book is also short enough that it can be easily read in one sitting. There is nothing to dislike about this book.
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. It was exceptionally well-edited and did not contain any errors. The cute illustrations, rhymes, and subject matter make this book perfect for children who have just started school or preschool. It can be used to help teach them to read while also encouraging the child to talk about their day and what they did at school. What Did You Do At School Today? is a great tool to help parents and children bond and encourages children to view their day at school with a little magic.
