Review of No Truce With The Vampires
[Following is a volunteer review of "No Truce With The Vampires" by Martyn Rhys Vaughan.]
No Truce With The Vampires by Martyn Rhys Vaughan is a fast-paced, captivating story set in a dystopian era where vampires take over the world just before the humans ruin it through war. But will these new saviors be good for mankind? Will humans accept vampires as their masters for saving the world, or will they fight back to reclaim control?
Charles Gray, the protagonist, is unlike any I've ever seen. He's not the typical hero I am used to. He doesn't have a savior complex to rescue humanity from vampires; instead, he is just an average cop, a sergeant, trying to maintain peace between vampires and humans. But there's a twist! The Old Gods are back! What do they want? Are they better or worse than the vampires? Will Charles support them or stand against them? Dive into the book to find out!
I loved the writing style of Martyn, as it's different from that of other authors. It's easy, free, and light, which is a refreshing change of pace for me. The story is told from Charles's point of view, and I found his character hilarious. The way he tries so hard not to make a fool of himself in front of his subordinate, Serafina, makes it even funnier. He also uses complex words in the narration like 'exsanguinated', just to show off.
The story is mysterious, with suspense building up until the very end, making it so captivating that I couldn't put the book down until I finished it. There is plenty of the story still waiting to be unraveled, and I can't wait to read the sequel.
There isn't much I disliked about the book, except that characters like Serafina and Charles's brother, Edward, were too mysterious for my liking. While I found myself just as frustrated as Charles because no one was telling him what was really going on, the build-up was worth it! The twists and turns toward the end took me completely by surprise.
The story's unpredictability was so intriguing that I rate it five out of five stars. The book was professionally edited, and I found only one typographical error. Although some of the dialogue was incorrect, I believe it was intentional. For instance, Charles's friend Felipe, who doesn't know English well, has poorly constructed sentences in his dialogue, but this reflects his character rather than being an error.
There are some triggers, including harsh language, graphic depictions of violence, and mentions of blood, so I don't recommend it to sensitive readers.
If you're looking for a book with a great plot, light and easy writing, and mysterious characters, this book is for you!
