For some new readers, learning to read can be hard, and discouraging if they don't start with the right kind of book. If the words are difficult to say, or if there are too many words, then some new readers can get discouraged. They could end up saying they don't like the book, or ask for it to be read to them. This can be a disheartening start for their reading journey, and could even lead to a disinterest in reading anything at all.

Now, I'm not suggesting we should limit what we read to kids based on the amount or size of the words in it. I read Eragon, the Hobbit, and Harry Potter to my kids, along with Goodnight Moon, and Frog and Toad. Those are all great stories, and nurturing a love of good stories is important. It helps to foster a desire for them to read on their own. But once it came time for them to learn how to read independently of me, it was important that I provide them with books specifically designed for new readers.

Toni the Superhero by R.D. Base, is a great example of what a good starter book is. The words and sentences are very simplistic and easy for young children to repeat. Being able to look at a word and read it out loud with confidence is a huge milestone for children, and this book can provide that to them.

Another big plus for this book is the illustrations. The images are adorable, unique, and very kid-friendly. Honestly, I have nothing negative to say about this book and saw no errors in the grammar, or presentation. It is exceptionally well-edited, and I gave it a 5 out of 5. I would recommend this book to any children who are beginning their journey as new readers, and parents wanting to help their kids start on the right foot.
