Everyone has heard the words, “What did you do at school today?” Whether you were on the answering or questioning end, we’ve all heard the question. Because it’s so familiar, we also likely know the answer will be bland or generic like “nothing,” or “I don’t know.” C.C. Lacavera’s book What Did You Do at School Today? guides parents and guardians hoping to get a small peek into their children’s imaginative world. In a clever rhyme scheme, the book goes through dozens of questions about a child’s day and the situations, whether real or imagined, they might have encountered.

My favorite part about this book is its utility. I am not a parent, but I have a younger sister, who I would have to pick up from school sometimes. I deeply sympathize with parents who are trying to connect with their children by trying to ask about their school day. When I asked, I would never receive details or specifics, even though I was desperately seeking more information. Lacavera’s book is here to help with this issue. It opens a door of communication between children and their parents, which is incredibly valuable in building a relationship.

The book’s illustrations are also worth noting. The designs are adorable, and I appreciate the art style the author chose. Although I’m not a child, I could see how the drawings would keep a child engaged with the story. Additionally, all of the drawings are incredibly diverse. All children who may read this book will see a reflection of themselves. I believe that’s incredibly important to children’s self-esteem, and I appreciate the author for paying special attention to such details.

Because of the book’s flawless editing and immense utility, I am pleased to give the book a five out of five star rating. I have no critiques of this book and highly recommend it to all parents and their children.
