Imagine having the power to go anywhere in the world without having to worry about catching a plane, train, or getting a set of your own wheels. All you need is the internet to travel anywhere you set your mind to. Author Alex Fayman presents us with the first book of a thrilling series with a scenario that goes beyond our wildest dreams but teaches us that getting everything we want is not without life-threatening consequences to follow.
Superhighway is a science fiction thriller about eighteen year-old Alex who discovers that he has the ability to travel from computer to computer based on anything he searches as well as mentally downloading a library of information just by touching the network cables. Knowing what it is like to have a dull life living in and out of an orphanage, Alex becomes a modern day Robin Hood stealing from the corrupt rich to give to the poor. He travels the globe, impresses women, buys expensive mansions, and eats all the food he wants while making sure the less fortunate are taken care of with the money he steals. Everything changes when Alex discovers that he is not alone in his gifts and how learning about his past can make a significant impact on his future.
The novel’s plot of having unlimited power in using the internet as a mode of travel with no possibility of being discovered is what glued me to the story. This is a genius plot that makes you wish it were a real possibility to travel by internet and unlock secrets that you would not be able to do otherwise. Fayman provides us with detailed descriptions to help us further understand the layout of this virtual world. You feel like you are joining Alex on this journey to grand locations like Amsterdam, Hawaii, and The Caribbean as well as savoring the delicious food that Alex continues to get his hands on. Feeling like you are receiving a front row seat to the exciting and unlimited opportunities that Alex receives makes you want this adventure of riches and splendor to never end.
The character of Alex intrigued me most of all. It helps that Superhighway was written in first-person since Alex is the driving force behind everything that happens. We can tell from the book's narration that Alex is sweet and caring to everyone around him and cannot turn away when people who are less fortunate need help. There is also another side to Alex where you can sympathize with him as he lets his new grand life get to his head. While you feel like shaking your head when Alex makes a foolish move, you tend to forgive him as having unlimited power can make you feel invincible from any wrongdoing. Fayman helps readers get a good picture of our main character to make us root for his heroic efforts and hope he does not get caught.
I rate Superhighway 4 out of 4 stars. This book entertained me the entire way while traveling with Alex on a number of destinations to rid the world of financial corruption. Only a couple of minor points bothered me like wanting more character development from Alex’s love interest, Eva, and for the background information of Alex’s father to be more clearer towards the end. Other than that, I absolutely recommend this book for those who love science fiction, adventure, surfing the internet, and thrills that will make you want to get your hands on the sequel as soon as you are done.
