Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon is a fascinating book about native American legends, ancient story-telling and self-discovery. It is filled with adventure, mysteries and a little drama. The book is well written and professionally edited. I did not find myself distracted by errors or typos.
The story takes place in the Pacific Northwest with the characters backpacking through the Olympic National Park. The story begins with Tom, William and Myra getting ready to head out on a journey to the place Tom’s grandfather is buried. Before they leave, Tom’s granddaughter Sarah is brought to his home. The three friends now debate if they can still take the trip and if bringing Sarah along for the journey is a good idea. They decide to go and this is where things get exciting. Before the end of the first trip, Sarah turns up missing. Tom, William and Myra do everything they can to locate her. When she is found, the friends find out that Sarah now has her own story to tell. This leads you to another journey of sorts. Along the way, the friends will meet a few bad guys that try to stop their mission and a few friends that assist them. The end of this book leads me to believe there will be a sequel and I cannot wait to read it.
I really cannot talk too much about the story as I find that everything I want to say gives away the story. I was completely “in to it” after the first couple pages. I couldn’t wait to see what would happen next. I became wrapped up with Tom and Sarah, William and Myra and rooting for them. The author did a great job of describing everything to make you feel as if you part of the story.
There really wasn’t anything I didn’t like about the story although there is one part where the book transitions to Sarah retelling a story that was a bit confusing at first, but after I figured out what was going on, it made sense. I also didn’t like the way the story ended. I felt that a few things were not wrapped up. I am sure this is due to this being the first book in a series so I will not deduct stars for the ending.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I believe this book would appeal to anyone that enjoys a little mystery and someone who really connects with the characters in stories. It is hard not to want to know more about them. I am sure I have said this before but I look forward to reading the sequel and catching up with the Tom, Sarah, William and Myra.
