Archie Luper’s “Heart and Harmony: Poetic Reflections on Legendary Singers” makes for a decent exploration into the lives of various legendary musicians. Right from the beginning, one would understand that this author truly admired good music and that his admiration for musicians did not just end at their musical prowess. This book takes the time to explain how many musicians have an effect beyond just the lyrics of their art.

The way that the ideas in this book were expressed showed how the author values clarity in his work. There was a detailed profiling of every musician that was mentioned, which included interesting facts about them and their best quotes. It helps bring familiarity to these superstars and lets readers connect with their favorite singers on a more human level. This part of the book shows the dedication on the author’s part to ensure that there was accurate information concerning these crucial details about the featured characters. One particular quote I remember is the one of Marvin Gaye that says, “If you cannot find peace within yourself, you will never find it anywhere.” Wise words like these add a bit of setup that would spark introspection, and I enjoyed that.

There was truly nothing about this book that I could point out as a negative aspect. I understood its main idea and really enjoyed its proper execution. Towards the end of every artist’s section, the author presents his ‘Heart and Harmony’ poems like a form of appreciation to the artist; this was all part of the skillful expression of the clarity of this book. Even though the book was in the form of actual scanned pages, I didn't see that as much of an obstacle to the whole interactive process. I found just one error in this book, and I rate it 5 out of 5 stars. A single error alone doesn't warrant removing a whole star from the rating.
