Title: Batty Wings
Author: Marlene Rattigan
Illustrations: Sergio Drumond

This is a delightful and heartwarming story. It broaches a subject that many women of a certain age would feel self-conscious about: the skin around the arms that loses its elasticity due to age would appear 'loose' if touched by children. They do not understand bodily changes yet, and this is a fun way to present this aspect. Nanna turns her grandson's question into an imaginative story, which has his imagination animated!

The book has a tone of love and safety, with thoughts of Nanna flying around the house and garden at night, protecting everyone inside, especially with an illustration showing him to be comfortable and asleep in his room. This is how most children, in a perfect world, should view their grandparents: stalwarts of safety, dependability and love.

The illustrations are excellent. Beautiful greens, warm and glowing oranges, smooth purple hues: colours to bring the eye to the page. I love the details, like the oranges on the trees and the lifelike depiction of bats.

The book brings the subject of bats to the fore. It would be a good idea to complement this book by taking the child who has this book to the zoo to see the bats.

The book is a good one for bedtime. The little ones will think about the story after the lights are off; hopefully, it will send them into dreamland! The prose is straightforward so learners won't have difficulty, and each page is bright with thought-provoking illustrations. Perhaps a very young child is not familiar with bats yet, so this would be a good book to see them in a picture.

The editing was perfect, and there was nothing to dislike. It would make a good birthday present, with, as I mentioned, a visit to the local bat sanctuary. This little book would be suitable for ages four to seven. I will award 'Batty Wings' five out of five stars.
