The Zima Code is one of those books where the chapters move back and forth between different eras of the main character Richard’s life, gradually building a picture of the conundrum he is in as the story progresses. Having, in his youth been of a stout left-leaning socialist but having long since moved into a more corporate world, circumstances thrust him into wondering what exactly he may or may not have agreed to do many years ago.

As the various characters are introduced, it is the reader’s guess as to whether these individuals are who they say they are; even as more information is unveiled about them, it is difficult to elicit where their affiliations truly lie, which adds a lot to the building intrigued. It makes the reader question, can Richard’s ideological roots even be achievable, are they a pipe dream, or is the only way to enact them a greater harm than an end stage capitalist society.

The book would appear to audiences who enjoy thrillers and mystery genres. I do not think a person needs to be ideologically a Capitalist, Socialist or indeed Communist to appreciate the storyline and the book overall. The book does contain some strong sexual references, particularly in relation to one character Melanie, but like all the other characters, there is much more to this character than first appears.

The Zima Code is a fantastic piece of writing. I would never normally rate a book as 5 stars, and given it is not necessarily of a genre or type I would normally actively choose to download or pick up in a bookshop, that really is a compliment to the author. My rating is based on it having a very interesting storyline, complex characters and a variety of interesting plot twists that really keep you engaged. It also has been well proofread, and I did not find any errors within it. I would recommend this work to others, especially if they are looking for something a little outside of their normal preferences.
