[Following is a volunteer review of "Memoir of a Deserter" by Thomas Foster.]
Memoir of a Deserter is a personal memoir by Thomas Foster about war, love, family, and social themes. Thomas now lives in Utah and has two children.
This memoir follows the story of Thomas. We follow his story as he grows up and seeks his own voice in the world. After trying many different jobs and activities, he eventually joined the US Army. The benefits of joining sound almost too good to be true to Thomas, but he gives it a chance. After being there for some time, he realizes that once you join, it’s difficult to quit, almost impossible. Because of this, he was deployed to dangerous missions in Afghanistan and Iraq in 2003. This was the time when the Forever Wars were beginning. We read about what these missions were like and what exactly went on there. After seeing and living through tough situations, Thomas decides to desert the army and never return. The following pages of the book tell us of everything that happened after he deserted the army and what he has been doing since.
The author writes in an approachable and fun way. Reading it feels like talking to a close friend. The author shares every little detail of his adventures with the reader. The chapters are in chronological order, so it’s easy to follow the story. I like how open the author was about every theme in this book. I liked everything about this memoir. No parts were boring or slow-paced. There wasn't anything about it that I didn't like.
I would recommend this book to readers struggling with questions about their life purpose, anyone not knowing what the next move is for them, and anyone who needs a push to make some changes. This memoir is inspiring, and I would recommend anyone, no matter what their job or stance on the army is, to read it.
Because I liked everything about this book, I rate it 5/5 stars.
