Grandmothers are really special. This book reminded me of the fun times I had with my own grandma. Batty Wings by Marlene Rattigan made me smile and think of those happy memories.

In the story, we see two young kids question their grandmother out of curiosity about why she has loose skin on her arms, to which she humorously replies that those are her batty wings. Nanna has a secret—she turns into a bat at night and flies around the house! Her grandchildren are amazed, but Nanna says it’s something magical. She tells them all about her adventures, which you’ll enjoy reading if this sounds fun to you.

One thing I truly liked about the book was the playful way in which it tackled the subject of aging. Instead of seeing the wrinkles or loose skin as a sign of getting old, the children viewed them as something magical. This, I believe, was a beautiful way to see aging in a positive light.

Another thing that children would learn from this short story is bravery. When Nanna shared her tales of flying around the house and acting as a protector for the family, it made the kids feel proud of their grandmother and made them believe how fearless she was. This is such a strong message in the book that all children who read it will benefit from it and learn to be brave.

A special mention must go to Sergio Drumond for his excellent illustrations. Children are going to love them. The illustrations make the story easy to imagine and even more enjoyable to read.

Thus, considering the amazing story, the teachings, and the illustrations, I would rate this children's book 5 out of 5 stars. I read the book in less than 30 minutes, but its impact will stay with me for a long time, even as an adult. The editing is absolutely perfect, and I have nothing to dislike about the book.

I would happily recommend it to all children between the ages of 5 and 12.
