Review of Deceptive Calm
I have always loved to read books, which enlighten me a lot on various topics and I did not hesitate when I came across this book. Deceptive Calm by Patricia Skipper is a book that stands out in various aspects, which I will be discussing in this review.
Vanessa Condon was abandoned by her parents in an orphanage for Black children in South Carolina. She was loved and taken care of by Sister Rosalie, along with other children in the orphanage. Vanessa's life has not been the best, as she was not adopted due to the color of her skin. As the story progresses, Vanessa has some bad experiences, which lead her to desire to start a new life, and she takes up the identity of a deceased baby and moves to California. She decides to leave her past life, which involved the orphanage, Barry Hale, Trisha, and many more, behind. What would life be like for her as Vanessa Vaughn in California? Will her little secret remain undisclosed? Find out by reading this book titled Deceptive Calm, written by Patricia Skipper.
Deceptive Calm was a unique book because Patricia has done her research properly before putting facts together. The book was entertaining and enlightening and it said a lot about what life was like back then. The impact of racism was really bad and not something I hope to experience. I see the character Vanessa as naive, as she made a lot of decisions that I questioned while reading this book. The book has some explicit scenes and should not be read by children. The friendship between Vanessa and Trisha was really nice to read about. The author did a good job in the characters' development as we watched these characters grow in both their ages and careers. I enjoyed the history discussed in this book, which was made possible by the character Sister Rosalie.
I have nothing to dislike about this book and I rate it 5 out of 5 stars. The book was professionally edited, as I encountered few errors while reading it. I recommend this book to adults and any mature reader who loves historical fiction with a touch of romance.
