Freddy Finds a Friend is a heartwarming little story about a fly that doesn’t fit in. Much like the reindeer in a popular Christmas story, Freddy is born with a physical deformity that makes it so he doesn’t fit in. His parents do their best to help him, but he struggles in spite of their best efforts. Just when he is at his lowest point, he finds encouragement from the most unlikely of sources and is able to soar.

This is a cute story that’s fun to read. It’s written in rhyme, which my kids love, and it has a few fun made-up words that had them giggling. The illustrations were very well done, and while the style was not my favorite, my two-year-old loved them.

Ironically, while my youngest was laughing his head off, his older brother (who is five) was a little scared. The climax of the story has Freddy navigating several perilous events, and I don’t know if it was the pictures or the words, but he got a little spooked. I don’t think the story is too frightening or mature for children of any age, but I thought I’d notate it. If you have a child who is particularly sensitive to stories about danger, be aware that there is a bit of that in this book.

As always when I review a children’s book, my own children are the judge. Two out of three gave this a huge thumbs-up, and the one that thought it was scary came around by the end of it. That means it is my pleasure to rate this book a solid five out of five stars. If you’ve got children in your life, especially if any of them sometimes feel out of place with their friends, I would recommend you get them this book.
