[Following is a volunteer review of "The Crystilleries of Echoland" by Dew Pellucid.]
I am rating “The Crystilleries of Echoland” by Dew Pellucid, narrated by B.J. Harrison, 5/5 stars. It was an absolute delight to listen to. I cannot think of a single thing that I would change with this book if given the opportunity; I personally saw no downsides. The editing was clearly done very well; there was a consistent pace to the entire book and I did not feel that there was ever too much extra information provided in a given scene.
The narrator matched the energy of the story perfectly. The storytelling was very whimsical, the narrator had a very smooth voice that flowed very nicely while listening to the book, and there were significant voice changes between characters, which is always appreciated while listening to an audiobook. The world-building that is done by the author is great; I liked that as a reader I was immediately sucked into the scene. The descriptions had me clearly picturing the scenes in my mind and made it easy to follow along with our main character, despite how fast-paced the story could be at times. I also liked the concept of this parallel world and its dynamics. While reading the description of the novel I was worried that it may be too complicated, but the author does a good job of explaining how the world works while not imposing too many hard rules.
It was very interesting to watch our main character, Will, grow while listening to the story. He starts off doing and saying things that could be very childish, and slowly we can see how he starts growing up and evolving into a competent strategist. He originally enters this world with one task at hand, save his sister, and he gets pulled into a political nightmare with many twists and turns that are so fun to follow. This would be a great book for the whole family to read or listen to together; I would recommend this book to people who enjoy high fantasy worlds with a fast-paced storyline. While there were some darker themes and heavy topics, there were enough lighter topics and funny anecdotes that kept the story a light read overall. The author did a fantastic job creating a world that made me care about the character’s politics and their individual concerns.
