Precision by D.C. Scott is the first book in the "Magruder Mysteries" series, an investigative series with Jay Magruder as the main character. Jay was a retired first-grade detective who took a job at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice upon retirement. Boredom leads him to discover an unsolved murder case, and a surprising helper motivates him to take the case.

However, it was not Magruder’s story that was told in this book; rather, the author took readers to the very genesis of this particular case — the life of John Riley Logan. If you do believe that a man cannot always be successful in everything in life, then this book proves that you are right. The ambidextrous John was a successful songwriter and singer with a successful landscaping business. Not only was he successful professionally, but he was also a charitable man, respected because of his love for children. Sadly, his love life was far from perfect. Though attractive to many women, John struggled to hold down a single woman. This book narrates the romantic experiences of this man. As a bonus, we get to read about some interesting characters like Lenny, Denny, Helen, Mara, Janice, Myron, and a host of others.

The author centers this story on major themes of friendship, familial connection, romance, and betrayal. “Captivating” is barely sufficient as an adjective to explain how hooked I was on the story. From the career growth of the main characters to their romantic experiences and even their charitable acts, I was imagining myself living their lives. So, it can be understood when I say I felt every emotion portrayed in the book. The author’s descriptive ability is to be appreciated for that. I also loved the character of John. He was an honest man to the best of his ability. John had a big heart that allowed him to love and respect every woman who came his way. Lenny was also a great character, and his friendship and partnership with John were things I admired while reading.

While I enjoyed the assortment of characters featured in this story, I must point out that the author went into too many details about some characters that were not important to the story. For example, too much information was given about Corrine’s childhood when I could hardly see her relevance in this story. And I could say exactly the same for Larry White’s family and his upbringing. I thought the information shared about them was hardly necessary. However, if the author went to that much length to prepare the ground for the sequels to this book, then I withdraw my sentiment. Other than that observation, I loved every aspect of this book.

In all, this book was a great read, and I see absolutely no reason not to give it a full 5/5 star rating. Great storytelling by the author, crowned with a good plot and vivid description of settings and scenes. My sentiment as to the unnecessary description would not make a dent in this rating, as it is only a sentiment and not an objective flaw. Hence, it should not spoil any reader’s enjoyment of the book. I would recommend this book to lovers of investigative mystery and romance fiction.
