[Following is a volunteer review of "Unexpected Lessons From Professor Higgins" by Patti Smith.]
The novel Unexpected Lessons from Professor Higgins was a well written insightful piece of literature. The author did a fantastic job of reflecting on feelings that occurred when the son, Chris, was born with Down's Syndrome. The book walked the reader through every concern and question that was raised from the time that the first doctor told the parents the diagnosis and strongly suggested that the baby be placed in an institution. The mother tried to find positive research about Down's Syndrome, but there was not much available at the time. Despite the challenges and naysayers, Chris' mom tried every day to expect the most of him and treat him like any other "typical" child. She struggled to not compare Chris to other same age peers since his development was delayed. Throughout the book, the mom detailed in depth the many life lessons that she and Chris' siblings learned from him. Above all, they learned how great it is to live in the moment and focus on happiness. I would strongly recommend this novel to any reader, especially a parent. I believe that it would be a helpful for a parent of a child diagnosed with Down's Syndrome.
