Superhighway by Alex Fayman is the introductory into the “Superhighway Trilogy.” It brings a unique take on the question ‘What if you could fly through the Internet and change data?’ Yes, hackers do this often as they search for information, but this book means it in the literal sense. To find out what this means, a reader needs to experience it for themselves.

Enter Alex Fine, a young, intelligent teenager that has a promising future but all is not what it seems. He has grown up an orphan and while he has had the opportunity to live outside the orphanage that he has lived in, the two times that he was almost adopted resulted in him being brought back. After that he chose to not be interested in potential parents, and instead started focusing on his studies with the help of the orphanage caretaker, Ms. Jenkins. It was actually Ms. Jenkins that named him, because a young man on the run brought baby Alex to her.

Something extraordinary happens to Alex one day, as he is using the computer lab at his home. He goes to grab the internet cord, and is transported into the internet. The whole experience is so unbelievable that it would be better for people to read it for themselves. It is the beginning of a new chapter for Alex and while it is mostly for the better, at times it is for the worst.

Alex makes many decisions that while benefit him as a whole, he also does good in philanthropy endeavors by accessing money from evil individuals. Sort of a modern day Robin Hood, since he wishes to be anonymous. However, it unfortunately catches up with him at one point and he witnesses some very dark, disturbing things that result in the death of a young woman that he was just getting to know. That is one of the main reasons that Alex begins doing work that helps others.

There is also another theme that Alex becomes involved in when he gets information about what his ability is. He becomes obsessed with revenge, since it comes out that his parents were killed as a cover up, as was his father’s family. Alex begins to research to see what he can do, but it turns out that everyone involved in his family’s deaths have already perished. However, he still manages to exact vengeance by attacking the company that killed his father’s family. The result is that he is now on the run and that is where the second book Superhighway 2 will pick up.

I would give this book 4 out of 4 stars. It is a great addition to the Science Fiction genre and at times was pretty intense to me. However, I didn’t enjoy the drug use, the sex, or the pretty graphic violence that led to people’s deaths. At one point I even considered stopping and quitting this book, but I decided to push forward.

The character development was pretty great, but at times Alex seemed a bit arrogant and shallow since he was always attracted to the pretty girls. This didn’t deter me from reading, but I found myself pushing on. As far as errors, I only saw two, refereed is supposed to be referred and publically should publicly. Those are the only things that saw were wrong.

At times I found myself making some connections on how elements were similar to other things in media. Such as special powers being a lot like the X-Men and the transportation on the internet reminded me of The Matrix Trilogy. I also remembered an animated superhero from the 90s called Freakazoid that had gotten his powers from the internet, but with he had blue skin and was a bit crazy. If anyone is a fan of these movies or shows then this would be the book series for them.
