The subject of Thomas Foster's book Memoir of a Deserter is his own life. Readers are given the author's account of his birth, childhood, and early years. He learned a variety of lessons from the folks who reared him. Additionally, Foster talks about his high school years and his experience with marijuana addiction. He talks about his experience returning to Galveston, Texas, with his companion Simone. He ends up working for the same insurance firm as her, but he gets dismissed because he is unhappy there. He also has a meaningful friendship with Josh and Lisa, which is shown in the story.

The author discusses his lack of direction before enlisting in the US Army and his search for order and meaning in his life in the first section of this book. However, army life brought with it unexpected experiences and hardships, particularly when sent to harsh areas like Afghanistan and Iraq. In 2003, he was sent to risky operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Endless Wars were only getting started at this time. We learn about the nature of these missions and the specific events that took place there. Thomas decides to leave the army and not return after witnessing and experiencing challenging circumstances. Everything that transpired after he left the service and his subsequent actions are detailed in the book's subsequent chapters.

One aspect I appreciated in this book was the author's honesty. He didn't hide anything from the audience. It was a fascinating read till the very end. I can't find anything wrong with this book. This book was well-edited, as I didn't see any mistakes while reading it. There was nothing to dislike about this book. I'll rate it 5 out of 5 stars. I'll suggest this book to those who enjoy military books, stories of personal growth, and the human side of modern conflict.
