Review of Speak Up! Tell Your Story to Influence Others
Susana G. Baumann’s book, Speak Up! Tell Your Story to Influence Others talks about the process of one discovering his or her voice and telling influential stories out of their life experiences. At the start, the author talks about a car accident that changed her life as it made her reflect on her life as an immigrant, a mother, an entrepreneur, and, as well, a survivor. She uses this story to drive into the greater message of the book, which is that our lives hold meaningful stories that can inspire, teach, and, as well, influence others, only when we assess ourselves in detail and tell the stories with honesty and intention.
The book has two main sections. The first part focuses on both self-awareness and development of a personal brand. This involves self-assessment of your personal values, character traits, leadership qualities, and cultural identity to better understand who you are. The second part goes into the mechanical aspect of storytelling, like the narrative structure, character development, themes, and also conflict, which is a powerful narrative driver.
I like many aspects of this book. First is the arrangement of the book; each section has subsections, such that one topic is explored at a time, making referencing easier and enhancing the flow. That the personal anecdotes come before the instructive part of the book, plus the warm, honest, and empowering tone of the author, enhanced the book’s relatability and made it more inviting and engaging. The exercises at the end of the book are helpful as they enhance the practicability of the book. Another important highlight is the choice of words, which, at almost every point, is suitable. I also appreciate how she skillfully uses movies as teaching tools, hence making many complex ideas easier to understand and apply.
Another thing I appreciate is the range and peculiarity of the audience, which features people from diverse backgrounds, especially women and immigrants, because they often seem to be silenced in society. That being said, I don't have any dislikes about this book because I didn't find anything that didn't sit well with me. Concerning the book's editing, I noticed only a few errors while reading this book, which shows that it was professionally edited.
Considering every reason I've mentioned above, I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. Whether you're a professional trying to grow your influence, or a speaker preparing to share your voice, or simply someone seeking clarity about his own identity, this book will give you both the tools and the confidence to speak up, so I recommend this book to such persons.
