Review of Stage Fright

[Following is a volunteer review of "Stage Fright" by John Gore.]
An inspiring, autobiographical story of a wealthy man living through cancer, remission, reoccurrence, and all the symptoms and setbacks that come alongside cancer's maw. The author does a great job using humor to add levity to the seriousness of his experience, which also serves to humanely address his cancer experience.
I found this story to be particularly relatable as I am the daughter of a cancer survivor, who's father also used humor because of, or in spite of, living through Stage 4 cancer and the subsequent physical disabilities as a result. The author's practical guidelines throughout this book on approaching cancer can be applicable to all persons involved in a cancer diagnosis: the diagnosed, those who are supporting someone with a diagnosis, and someone who loves someone with a diagnosis.
I feel that the intermission was interesting, as we get to learn the backstory of the author's role and development of BP as it expands (which we might have heard about in the news), but the intermission did not seem to add any meaningful content to his cancer story. The author's personable writing style included flawless grammar!
I appreciated the author's acknowledgement in the postscript of his economic status being a key factor in his treatment. As a middle-class reviewer, I couldn't help but think about if I were to have a similar diagnosis one day, my cancer story would be significantly different than the author's simply based on socio-economic status. He provides a few resources as reminders of where people can get care.
The author's advice and encouragement in his steps while receiving a cancer diagnosis was heartening. Oftentimes, news of a cancer diagnosis is the worst case scenario for anyone. The author's use of humor, practical steps, sharing of personal experience, and encouragement of advocacy is the perfect guide for anyone who has received a cancer diagnosis, or who is caring for someone with a cancer diagnosis.
