Harold and Lewey by Bela Feketekuty entertains readers with a suspense-filled psychological thriller. This short story succinctly deals with paranoia and morality and sets up symbolic elements that aid the storytelling.

The titular characters Harold and Lewey—history and art major students, respectively—are on their way to the secluded residence of Harold’s uncle for a vacation. Their car breaks down, leaving them on foot. Neither of them has any idea how long it might take to reach the destination through the forest-covered hills ahead of them. The long journey begins for the friends. Soon Lewey notices someone following them. The stranger stops as they stop, takes the same turn, calmly mirrors everything they do, and occasionally gets out of view only to emerge back quietly. Paranoia builds in Lewey, who suddenly recalls the classic movie Deliverance, and they are soon in a hide-and-seek chase with their stalker. Harold, who was calm at first, now can’t deny the scare once the sun gives way to the moon. The chase seems to last forever, and his uncle’s home is nowhere in sight. Did they escape their menace?

There’s a superstition that saving a turtle on the road is said to bring good luck. In Harold’s case, it brings him the wisdom of knowing wrong from right, symbolically as I see it, which he could have lived peacefully without. There are also other symbols that you can task yourself with to figure out the identity of the stalker before the reveal. It’s pretty clever at the end when you know who’s truly paranoid. Watch out for the unreliable narrator, Harold.

The book has 2 chapters. The second chapter is about the aftermath of what happened that night. It suddenly took a different course that left me confounded for a moment, but I slowly fell back into the flow. The twist makes up for it. Other than that, I loved it. A classic storyline but told with the author’s unique charm. The first chapter was thrilling and exciting and kept me on edge like a good horror story should.

I would have loved Lewey’s perspective. It would have added a lot more spice. But the story is still captivating, and hence a 5 out of 5 from me. The editing is spotless with no profanity or mature content, and it is a perfect entertainer for readers of all ages. This book will engross those who love suspenseful thrillers with deep psychological subjects and creative twists. Short and cozy, it makes a great read for a moonlit evening.

Whoo! I am shaking already from your summary. I think I will enjoy reading this book. Thank you for taking the time to share it with us.
‘When you do a good deed, people are grateful, and that creates a nice feeling inside you; and then because it feels good, that makes you want to do more good deeds. That repetition is the cycle of goodness.’
