[Following is a volunteer review of "A. Nonny Mouse" by Doreen Lindahl.]
A. Nonny Mouse: Magical Moon Mouse Finds Merry Christmas is an engaging story about a moon mouse discovering the true meaning of Christmas. Doreen Lindahl, the author, skillfully sets the scene and tone, with vivid details about the setting and sweet characters. I rate it a 5 out of 5. It's simple enough for young children to follow the story and its lessons, making it perfect for family holiday reading. The author introduces lovable characters and exciting adventures that draw readers in, presenting a unique concept.
The story follows A. Nonny Mouse and his five moon mouse friends as he faces friendship challenges and learns important lessons about being a good friend. At the beginning of the story, a fairy gives A. Nonny a special gift, which leads to some unkindness and hurt feelings, which is very relatable to friendships in small children. He is then given a task that helps him better understand what it means to be a good friend through an adventure.
This story offers a fresh way to introduce young readers and listeners to the meaning and magic of Christmas. Since A. Nonny Mouse is unfamiliar with Earthly traditions, it's fun to watch him experience Christmas for the first time. Through his journey, we see twinkling lights and hear Christmas songs and meet new characters that, again, are easy to love. They give him the most important gift of the story.
The illustrations show the moon mice and other characters. Though mostly clip-art style, they add a cute visual element that helps bring the characters to life alongside their descriptions. The ending invites discussion about what A. Nonny could have done differently; what lessons were learned, and how they were interpreted by the reader or listener.
Overall, it's an enjoyable story that could be read each holiday season.
