Review of Mayor of PØmpington: Contesting Aliens
[Following is a volunteer review of "Mayor of PØmpington: Contesting Aliens" by Dr. HB Paksoy.]
I rated Mayor of PØmpington: Contesting Aliens 1 out of 5 stars. When reading the description of the plot, I had certain expectations. I imagined action, politics, and above all else … aliens. However, not only did the novel lack any true connection to alien plot points, but it also seemed to lack a plot altogether. This fast-paced novel jumped from minor plots at a neck-breaking speed that seemed to contribute little to the overall cohesion of the storyline. This can be demonstrated in the laundry list of titles the main character earns and cycles through. I believe that the chapters within the book could be read in nearly any order and the story would still remain intact.
This novel also contained an elementary ‘tell, not show’ approach that never allowed the reader to enter the world created. I struggled to get a sense of the main character's soul and the narration appeared to be very surface-level.
As a woman, I found this book to be hard to digest or root for. The main character seemed to be written as an alter ego for the life a man wished he had. The way the main character walks into a room and all the men are intimidated by him and all the women would kill to be with him while he remained nonchalant seemed like wishful thinking. Don’t get me wrong, I love a confident and attractive main character but I struggled with the fact that all of these reactions seemed largely unearned and were not backed up by any of the main character’s actions. The whole book seemed immature. The way the author writes women is utterly demeaning. The novel introduces several high-ranking and successful women to the plot and one by one they all throw themselves at the main character and are treated like objects. They hold no emotional weight within the story and this can be seen in their impact, or lack thereof, on the main character and how rarely they are referenced when not in the room.
The immature writing style is coupled with poor editing, making typos a dime a dozen. The book was laden with spelling and grammatical errors, as well as plot mistakes such as gender mix-ups. These issues made it difficult to follow what little plot existed.
I have immense respect for anyone who is able to write a book, let alone a series as this author has. However, this book feels more like a personal fantasy as opposed to a fully developed work suitable for a broader audience.
