[Following is a volunteer review of "21 Hacks to ROCK your Midlife!" by Cat Coluccio.]
21 Hacks to ROCK Your Midlife! is a no-nonsense guide for women aged 40 and upwards who feel their life is stagnant. Cat Coluccio aims to inspire these women to dig deep, identifying first who they are before aiming to be who they want to be, what they want to do, and how to get there. The book is structured into seven parts, looking at grasping reality, letting go of baggage, decluttering, want vs need, setting up for success, taking action, and owning the spotlight. Each hack includes action tasks to prompt readers to work towards a purposeful life.
The writing style is conversational and direct, with a strong emphasis on making choices without guilt and accepting that life decisions can be out of one’s control. Coluccio provides the brutal truth that not everyone is perfect; however, everyone has the potential to get to where they want to be if they follow the action steps. Examples can be whether to start a business, whether to relocate, choosing to move on from a divorce, and decluttering the home. The structure of the book is also easy to read, providing comprehensive step-by-step guides on what women going through midlife can and want to do. This includes digital detoxing, brain dumping, and itemising wants and don’t wants.
21 Hacks to ROCK Your Midlife! revolves around Coluccio’s struggles as an introvert managing a midlife phase. However, the book could have warranted real-life accounts from additional women, as well as those who are single or homosexual (as the book only mentions married, divorced, and widowed women with families and children), to provide a well-rounded insight into rocking the midlife stage of life. Hack #7 is also contradictory. The hack is honouring the past but also forgetting the past. Like many self-help guides, readers are encouraged to forget their past and to let go of negative memories while looking to the future. However, Hack #7 touches on nostalgia and good memories despite informing readers to leave their past behind.
I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. 21 Hacks to ROCK Your Midlife! loses a star predominantly because the book could have included other accounts to gain insight into the results of the steps. Nonetheless, 21 Hacks to ROCK Your Midlife! is ultimately inspiring and justifies why midlife is not a dead end. The book is ideal for women who feel stagnant in life, believing that from the age of 40, 50, or 60 means life is supposed to slow down or stop entirely. However, Coluccio argues against this, empowering women to continue to find their purpose and propel their lives into action regardless of age. This is not a passive read because there are action steps for readers to take a moment and dig deep into where they want the second half of their life to go.
