Imagine four high school students who only have one concern: passing their SATs. Now, imagine these four suddenly enthralled in an epic battle against evil. Finally, add in a mix of terrifyingly hilarious situations. That about sums up the plot for Demon Freaks by Jim Hardison
Ron, Bing, Meat and Katelyn have just one evening left to study before the Big Test, and, because the four of them also play together in a punk band, they naturally should also study together. A secluded cabin in the woods is their meeting place of choice. These four probably didn't watch the many horror movies that warn against secluded cabins. As luck would have it, the Golfer's Association was about to show them just what 'horror' truly means.
The plot is surprisingly enjoyable, filled with laugh out loud adventure and supernatural silliness. I was glued to every page from beginning to end. The blend of outrageous comedy and action had me crying with laughter, and at the same time shaking with fear. The book also has a solid yet surprising ending. I always enjoy a twist at the end.
Although some scenes might be a bit over the top, this in my opinion is what makes this book truly unique. The characters are also quite relatable. I particularly enjoyed Ron (Bing's identical twin brother). His nonchalant nature tends to get he and his brother in trouble, so much so that in the beginning of the book we are told that the two of them face possible expulsion. Ron's idea to squeeze in a 'jam' session before studying for the SATs however, is also what takes the team on one of the greatest adventures of their life.
The book is written for young adults but I would also recommend it to anyone who enjoys horror comedy, paranormal fiction and all out mystery. Anyone could easily appreciate Jim Hardison's work in Demon Freaks. However, reference is made to 'Jesus Christ' and the team at one point questions the existence of God. If you are easily offended by such things, perhaps you might not enjoy this piece.
I can not give this book another rating other than 4 out of 4. I truly enjoyed every minute of this suspenseful work from beginning to end. The writing was witty and intelligible. I am looking forward to future works from this author as I am now a huge fan. Go get your copy today!
