[Following is a volunteer review of "Speak Up! Tell Your Story to Influence Others" by Susana G Baumann.]
"Speak up! Tell Your Story to Influence Others" by Susana G. Baumann is a powerful and inspiring guide that teaches individuals the art of storytelling in a multifaceted approach and highlights the transformative effects of telling one's story, as it is a major way of making people sit in feelings that aren't theirs and also helps them grow muscle for empathy. The author started the book by sharing her own personal life-changing experience, from moving to the US from Argentina to surviving an accident that totally changed the trajectory of her life.
Her experiences with different challenges, such as ageism, serve as a compelling example of how personal narratives can be used to inspire others. The book also delves into issues of discrimination, stereotypes, sexism and how people sharing their own personal experiences can help resolve these issues. The book is also loaded with a lot of the author's experience, which was very practical and encouraging.
One thing that stood out for me in this work was the author's style of writing, which was full of information but also easy to follow. It also felt personal and relatable, as though she was speaking directly to me, urging me to share my own story and also using movie references to illustrate as well as buttress her point. The story was well structured and organized, containing anecdotes that demonstrate the importance of storytelling and lending one's voice.
I don't dislike anything about the book; though it was quite long for its purpose, I would definitely go back to it for more insight, especially as regards telling my own story and gaining influence. I also didn't find any errors in this book, which showed that it was exceptionally well edited and made the reading process a smooth ride.
I rate this book a 5 out of 5 stars and recommend it to writers who are just starting their careers and also to the younger generation.
