Deceptive calm is a story that I would rate four out of five stars!
It is a non-stop wild ride from the beginning all the way through to the end! The author starts the action at the beginning of Chapter One and from there, you are instantly hooked! Skipper’s story moves through the life and challenges of two best friends, Vanessa and Trisha. The author introduces the normal traumas of attending high school with the added stressor of managing a difficult time in American history. The author then brings the reader through the emotional lessons that the characters learn from budding sexuality, complications in adulthood, and even includes love stories sprinkled throughout which keep things interesting. The reader gets to know and love the characters easily and becomes invested early on in the surprise-filled Chapter 1. Skipper keeps the reader engaged and guessing all the way through to the end.
The author has what seems like a natural ability to set difficult scenes and navigate complex situations faced by the main characters in a way that is raw and real.
I only took one point from a five-star rating because this book is not for all readers. Readers should be prepared for the fact that parts of the book take place during the Civil Rights Era and the author utilizes commonly used racial slurs from that timeframe to help set the emotional tone of the scene. There is also more accepted profanity sprinkled throughout the book to convey the emotions and personalities of the characters. Finally, there are a few sex scenes in this story as well. They range from sweet moments that move into sex to potentially triggering sexual assault, and a few moments in between.
Regardless of the potentially triggering profanity and sexuality, I would recommend this book to any mature reader.
