REVIEW OF THE ELF COUP, BOOK THREE OF THE MAGI CHARTER BY JORDAN DAVID.
Missing sisters… Stolen faces… The creature Krampus on Rampage… Mistletoe scheming…. A dark story twisting to engulf happiness forever… Elf Coup, book three of the Magi Charter.
Elf Coup opens directly in a chaotic atmosphere; the creature Krampus is after Santa, every elf says, but one thing that is left unsaid is why the name Krampus incites panic. Santa’s absence from North Pole causes the operations to fall into disarray, enabling a certain elf to enforce his world domination plans. And the reason behind Noel Night’s secretive recruit is revealed; he is to be the last line of defense against Mistletoe Green’s evil agendas and against his Directory of elves helping to enforce his command and ensure his rule.
The larger than life imagination of the author thrilled me as I read through the book; the author didn’t just tell a story, he painted a story. The way he was able to portray emotions and still make it come alive rather than being captivated by the fictional setting is remarkable. The characters are well developed and relatable rather than being spasmodic portrayals as I’ve encountered in several fictional works. And there’s that moment when a mystery is uncovered and you go…’there, I did not see that coming’ but then you find out it should make sense because the clues were there all along.
In the book, Santa returns to North Pole to find out he had been undermined by a certain egotistic mega-villainous elf that now seats as head. The creature Krampus is still on the loose abducting elves, the polar bears under Mistletoe’s leadership are wrecking havoc… the North Pole Santa left is as different as the North Pole he returned to. With Santa locked up, Noel Night becomes North Pole’s last line of defense against the egotistical Mistletoe. Facing an opponent with lots of years of experience is daunting, facing an enemy who you know is a lot stronger than you is challenging, facing a foe who has already won is impossible…but Noel Night has to make a stand for the North Pole and save it from an overachieving villain. Noel Night against Mistletoe…and North Pole may still be saved.
The author’s creative writing throughout the book didn’t disappoint, instead it pulls you in more and more into a world so imaginative and yet so real at the same time; you actually start to shiver from the biting cold of the North Pole. I give the book ‘4 out of 4 stars’. There’s that feeling that you have when reading a good book that doesn’t only surprise but also captivates and makes you laugh from time to time, this book is all about that.
I would classify the book as fantasy, fiction and mystery. I strongly recommend it to children and young adults, though it’s a good read for all ages.
Quotes from the book:
“Your nemesis will not wait for you to be well rested and preened. He will strike when it is convenient for him, not you”
“Overconfidence is a trait of your nemesis. It can just as easily be your undoing”
