Strong Heart is a book that will engage you very quickly and leave you thinking about the book even after you've finished. I was quite surprised by this book, as historical fiction is not a topic I gravitate towards. The research was impressive and woven into the book in such a way that it did not feel long winded or dry.
The story is set on the Olympic Peninsula with much descriptive detail provided. The main premise of the story is a hiking trip that is interrupted before it begins, with the arrival of of Sarah. Sarah is meeting her grandfather, Tom, for the first time when he's cajoled into her bringing her along on the trip. Sarah has never been hiking before, but watching her character develop and seeing a beautiful tale of strength and courage is what hooks you on this character. Sarah gets lost on the trip and the adventures she has are entertaining and keep you guessing about what will happen next. This truly allowed the story to develop a strong female lead that many people will be able to relate to. She is somewhat mischevious, but you feel for her considering the background of her character in the beginning.
Strong Heart did build somewhat slowly until the fourth or fifth chapter of the book, so please give it time. At that point, the story was fast paced and engaging. The ending of the book was wrapped up well, with both the historical aspect, and present story. The writer did a beautiful job of intertwining the historical details into the modern story. It didn't feel forced or too educational while reading about the native land and people of the Olympic Peninsula.
The editing and grammar were impeccable. I was hard pressed to find any errors, which I didn't have any notated while reading. I find it somewhat distracting when punctuation is left out, or conversations aren't appropriately notated between characters. The beauty of this book is the lack of distractions while reading it. There were no issues with editing, and there were no areas that felt unnecessary in the story. The author described the land in detail but it never felt excessive.
I found myself thinking about this book for days after I had finished, which is honestly rare. For this reason I would give the book 4 out of 4 stars. I found myself invested in this story, not only while reading, but afterwards. I gravitated towards obtaining more information regarding the geography and history. I would highly recommend this book.
