Ellie Ment and the Matter of Materials by Bertie Stephens is an action-packed, humorous middle-grade fantasy that combines science and magic. The book features Ellie, the curious protagonist, who questions the reality of magic until strange occurrences such as her school going up in purple fires draws her into the world of elemental bracers and the hidden society.Key takeaways scientific concepts such as chemical reactions, the elements in the periodic table, and quantum mechanics combine neatly in the story. Readers love the book’s cleverness, humorous references to microplastics, the environment, and the promotion of curious, analytical, thinking kids.

The writing style is witty, fast-paced, and full of quirky details that make Hapsie, the rainy little town where the story unfolds, come alive. From a pothole nicknamed “Stego-hole” to eccentric teachers with odd habits, every scene is sprinkled with humor and charm. I also loved the way the book seamlessly weaves real scientific principles into the plot without ever feeling heavy-handed. Concepts like chemical reactions and quantum mechanics appear in a way that sparks curiosity rather than sounding like a lesson. Kids who love STEM—or even those who don’t yet—will find something to be excited about here.

Minor Flaws certain issues in pacing, attributed to some scientific explanations in the story, and the complex reasons of the main bad guy receive some complaints without making much difference in the story.Kids will enjoy the wacky atmosphere, whereas adults may find difficulties in some of the jokes. It suits highly inquisitive pre-teens (Aged 8-12) who would appreciate the science element. It expands their vocabulary and sparks science experiments.

I think this is one of the best child books that l have ever read very interesting, l would rate it very highly and recommend it to those who love magical kind of book reading.
